Santa Barbara, California Timeline

1786 - Mission Santa Barbara founded
1796 - Outbreaks of Typhoid and Pneumonia
1801 - Diptheria Epidemic
1806 - Measles Epidemic
1812 - A earthquake did major damage to the Santa Barbara Mission
1821 - Mexico gains independence from Spain
1822 - Measles Epidemic
1827 - Measles Outreaks
1844 - Small Pox Epidemic
1848 - Treaty of Gaudalupe signed, and California is ceded ti the United States
1849 - Gold Rush starts
1868 - The Santa Barbara Post started publication
1870 - English replaces Spanish for all public documents
1871 - The Post changes to The Santa Barbara Press
1884 - The Santa Barbara Independent starts publication
1894 - Santa Barbara News starts publication
1900 - Santa Barbara Police Department created
1901 - Southern Pacific Railroad connects Santa Barbara to Los Angeles and San Francisco
1925 - A 6.8 earthquake causes major damage, 12 killed
