Santa Cruz, California Timeline

This is meant to be a very basic timeline of events that were happening duringthe lives of your ancestors, and aid in genealogical research by locality.  Click here for links to rosters, directories, documents, etc. that reference Santa Cruz. Some of the  Native American Tribes known to inhabit California were the Hupa, Maidu, Pomo, Modic, Mohave, Chowignas, Pimunguns.  According to Ereferencedesk there were over 135 distinct language dialects.
1542 The official discovery of California by Spain
1545 Typhus and other European diseases start killing larges amounts of native populations in Cuba, and New Spain
1579 Sir Francis Drake claims some land north of San Francisco for England
1633 - 1634 Small Pox
Spanish missionaries start settling California in the 1700s
1775 - 1783 Revolutionary War
1776 Declaration of Independence signed
1793 Yellow Fever
1812 Russian fur traders build Fort Ross just north of San Francisco
1820 American Trappers start arriving from the East
1820 - 1875 Texas - Indian Wars
1821 Mexico gained independence from Spain

Ocean Park / Venice, California Basic Timeline

1848 Mexico cedes California to the United States
1849 The Gold Rush begins
1862 The great floods of California
1870s Ocean Park and Santa Monica is being settled
1875 Santa Monica Founded
1876 Southern Pacific Railroad completes a line between San Francisco to Los Angeles
1880 Abbot Kinney decides to turn Santa Monica into a beach resort then focus on Venice of America
1885 Santa Fe Railroad comes to Los Angeles
1886 Santa Monica incoporated
1890s - 1910 Piers, Attractions and Housing were built to draw tourists to the area.
1895  The area is named Ocean Park
Venice was called Ocean Park at the time
1899 Ocean Park Post Office opens
1901 Ocean Park had about 200 cottages, a few stores, a pleasure pier, a casino, race track, and post office.
1904 Ocean Park Developement Company is dissolved, the unincorporated area goes by Ocean Park, although some of the areas that were considered Ocean park lie in Santa Monica.
Kinney wins the famous coin toss and gains the marshlands.
1905 Ocean Park Bath House Opens, and is a huge draw for tourists
1906-1911 There are power struggles over what city owns Venice of America. 
1911 Ocean Park's name is changed to Venice
1925 Voters in Venice vote to be annexed to Los Angeles
